MY GOD IS BLACK

I was born by the river, in the mud where my Lord passed by. And I heard a secret, my God is Black.

Born of the Word of God, made alive by His Spirit. In a little while I heard a whisper, a little voice saying: my God is Black.

My God is all things to all men; at the center of creation lies His hand. At his voice the water falls; at His command, the oceans rise; at His rebuke, the mountains flee.

At the beginning of creation, so was He; at the end of creation, so will He. All men are equal before Him: my God is no respecter of men.

At the end of the day I hear a whisper, a little voice speaking Truth— My God is Black! He's no racist, no downgrader of men, just pure, invisible, my God is White.

In the face of all men: Dark, Yellow, Asian, Caucasian, Indonesian, Polynesian, Black, Tanned, Aboriginal, Indian: I am. And I heard the truth: my God is All.

We were born by the River, in the mud where our Lord passed by— breathed upon— and there we know the Truth: Our God is All..

I was born by the river is a line from the late Sam Cooke's silent protest song: A Change is Gonna Come, which he composed after listening and being challenged by Bob Dylan's Blowing in the Wind. This line also refers to foundation of the Christian faith, where God made man in his image and likeness at the garden of Eden.
